Cheat Sheet: How To Replace A Hot Spring Spa Control Box and Control Head (2001-2009.5)

In this guide, we will show you how to replace a Hot Spring Spa control box and control head with the 77271 control box, 73225 control head, and 71510 or 71509 control panel bezel that is in every 2001-2009.5 Hot Spring Spa. Before we get started, let’s go over the tools and parts you will need.

Tools you will need to Replace the Control Box and Control Head in a 2001-2009.5 Hot Spring Spa:

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Small Flathead screwdriver
  • Needle nose vice grips
  • Pliers
  • Wire cutters/strippers

Parts you will need:

  • IQ 2020 Control Box, Hot Spring, Item #: 77271
  • Control Head, Hot Spring, Item #: 73225
  • Control Panel Bezel, Hot Spring, 1-Pump, Item #: 71510
  • For spas with 2 Jet Pumps: Control Panel Bezel, Hot Spring, 2-Pump, Item #: 71509

Step 1. Disconnect power from the spa. Take photos of the terminal block wiring.

Step 1. Disconnect the power-

Step 2. Remove the equipment door and the IQ2020 control box lid.

Step 2. Remove door-
Step 2.5 remove the lid-

Step 3. Disconnect the heater wires, incoming power wires, jet pump wires, circ pump wires, ozone wires, and sensors from the motherboard. Disconnect the control head and remove the incoming power from the box. Disconnect the copper bonding wire and loosen the two control box mounting screws. Remove the old control box.

Step 3. Remove the control box mounting screws-
Step 3.5. Remove the old box-

Step 4. Install the new control box by inserting the plastic hangers into the grooves and sliding the control box to the left.

Step 4. INstall box-

Install the control box mounting screws.

Install the power jumpers on the terminal block.

Step 4.5. jumpers-

Connect the black, white, and green incoming power wires to the terminal block.

Step 4.75. Connect the power wires-

Step 5. Connect the black (H2), white (H1), and green (Ground) heater wires to the terminal block.

Step 5. Connect the heater-

Connect the copper bonding wire to the bonding terminal.

Step 5.5 bonding wire-

Step 6. Connect the REGTHERM (P27), LIMTHERM (P5), and PRESSURE SWITCH (P34) to the motherboard. Make sure the connectors are perfectly aligned with the port pins, otherwise the power light will flash and the spa will be inoperable.

Step 6. Sensors-

Step 7. Connect the ozone to P36, P26, and P32 on the motherboard.

Step 7. Connect the ozone-

Step 8. Connect the circulation pump to P25, P31, and P22 on the motherboard. Connect the LED spa light to P11.

Step 8. Connect the circ pump-

Step 9. Connect the jet pump to P19, P18, and P29 on the motherboard.

Step 9. Connect the jet pump-

Step 10. Remove the old control panel bezel and control head.

Step 10. Remove the old control panel-

Step 11. Screw the new control panel bezel and head together.

Step 11. Screw the bezel and head-

Step 12. Install the new bezel and head.

Step 12. Install the new control panel-

Step 13. Plug the control head into the P2 Control Head port on the motherboard with the red stripe on the ribbon cable facing up.

Step 13.75. Plug in the ribbon cable-
