We will give you some simple steps to get rid of and prevent algae from forming in your spa.

If you have owned your spa for any amount of time, you would know that maintaining good water chemistry is crucial to the health of you and your spa. When your chlorine levels, ph levels, and alkalinity levels get thrown out of wack, it creates an ideal environment for bacteria (like algae).

Some Causes of Algae

If you use your spa regularly and don’t maintain good water chemistry balance, the likelihood of you encountering algae is high. Dirt and oils (and other things) from our bodies are introduced into the water every time we use the spa. On occasion, people can bring algae particles with them into the spa. It only takes a couple of days for Algae to start turning your spa water cloudy and green.

Another way algae can invade your spa is by leaving the cover off of your spa. When your spa is left uncovered, leaves, sticks, and other natural debris can fall into your spa. When this happens, the natural plants can introduce algae into the water. Another thing that also causes algae to thrive is sunlight. An easy way to solve this problem is to keep your spa covered when you aren’t using it.

How to Remove Algae From Your Spa

Here are some easy ways you can prevent and remove algae from your spa water.

  1. Rinse off before getting in your spa
  2. Keep your water chemistry balanced (pH levels especially):
  3. Drain and clean your spa
  4. Shock your spa (Enhanced Shock or Non-chlorine oxidizer)
  5. Clean your spa filters with filter cleaner
  6. Wipe down and sanitize your spa cover thoroughly

NOTE: There are various types of algae that can grow in your spa (green, yellow, white, and black) and they are not harmful to you. They are however gross feeling and unpleasant to sit in.

In general, if you maintain good water chemistry and keep your spa covered you shouldn’t have issues with algae.
