Welcome to Backyardplus! In this post, we show you how to download spa software and format your USB drive for those that are updating their control box software.
What You Will Need:
- Visit backyardplus.com and purchase the spa software download here. Select OPTION 2 and input your spa’s serial number so we can determine which spa software your tub requires.
- Purchase or locate a 2.0 USB drive that is less than 8GB and formatted to FAT 32 (steps below)
- Remove all files from your USB drive
How to Format USB
Step 1:
- Insert your USB flash drive (less than 8GB in size) to your USB port on your computer
- Open your windows explorer and locate the drive

There are two control boxes that will not work unless the correct software is uploaded via USB to the control box unit. Item 76836 (Eagle Control Box) and item 76840 (Hawk Control Box). Each tub needs its own specific software uploaded to it in order for the box to work when you install it on your hot tub. When you buy this service from us, we will upload the correct software according to the serial number provided and we will also program your hot tub’s control panel settings into the new control box you purchase from us so that installation is a breeze. Step 2:
- In your windows explorer, locate the drive (can be found under “This PC”)
- Once you’ve located the USB drive, right click with your mouse
Step 3:
- Once you’ve located the USB drive, right click with your mouse
- Select “Format“
Step 4:
- Select FAT 32 from pull down menu
- Select “Quick Format“
- Click Start
- Click “ok” after you have read the warning
Step 5:
- Once you’ve finished formatting the USB drive, select “Close” on the menu
How to Download Spa Software
Step 1:
- After you have purchased the software update and after our technicians have verified your spa serial number, a confirmation email with the file download will be sent to you.
- Click on the download file
Step 2:
- If using Google Chrome, the file will appear in the browser’s recent download history
- Click on the file and a folder will open automatically
Step 3:
- The download file is a compressed Zip file. This means that in order to open the files, copy the files, etc., you need to decompress them through the “Extract All” process
- Click “Extract All“
Step 4:
- Select the file where you would like the extracted files to be located. Windows may default to the same folder that the zip file is located, usually the downloads folder.
- Click “Extract “
Step 5:
- Now that your files have been decompressed/extracted from the zip folder, you can move them, open them, etc.
- The .hex file is the software file that you will copy to your USB flash drive
Step 6:
- Now that your files have been decompressed/extracted from the zip folder, you can move them, open them, etc.
- The .hex file is the software file that you will copy to your USB flash drive
- Copy the .hex file
- Paste the .hex file to your USB drive
Step 7:
- Now that your files have been decompressed/extracted from the zip folder, you can move them, open them, etc.

Step 8:
- After you’ve copied the .hex file to your USB drive, it is now time to eject and remove the USB flash drive
- Right click on the USB Drive and click “Eject” on the menu
- A message will appear letting you know it’s safe to remove the hardware. Once you see the message, you can remove your USB drive from your computer
- You are now ready to take the next steps to upload the software to your control box
