Description

What is included:  Upgraded IQ 2020 Heater Relay Board w/ Jumpers & Shortened Screws for the front cover of the IQ2020

Description:
This IQ 2020 Heater Relay Board (for Hot Spring, Tiger River & Limelight) is the newest revision for the 2001-2009.5 IQ2020 Control Box. It’s upgraded design provides a more efficient method of connecting the heater’s power cord to this board, therefore, reducing fatigue on the two “beefed up” relays. The black wire from the heater’s power cord now connects into the H1 position on the large gray terminal block. The heater’s white wire (neutral) connects onto its own separate gray terminal block labeled H2. This will reduce stress on the relays and increase their lifespan due to better transfer of voltage. The ground wire connection remains the same. The incoming power wires and the black & white wire from the heater are inserted into the gray terminal blocks round holes by prying the gate open using a small screwdriver. This upgraded circuit board replaces the 1st, 2nd & 3rd generation boards in the IQ 2020 Control Box found in all 2001-2009.5 Hot Spring, 2001-2009 Tiger River, and 2008-2009 Limelight spa models.

Symptoms this part has failed:
• No power going to the heater even though the red HTR ON L.E.D. light is lit inside the IQ2020 control box.
• The heater board is charred on the front and/or the backside.

Note: In older control boxes, you may encounter that a chip on this new heater relay board prevents the metal guard from seating properly and it may need to be trimmed. Installation Instructions PDF for more details.

if the water is cold and AC going to your heater is not 128V (or 220 depending on your unit) then it's probably this board

Regarding this specific part — I had a 2006 model and the board was a different design but 100% fit with no problems — The thing to test is ifs your HTR led is on there should be voltage (128v AC in my case) switched to the heater unit (the cables to the left of the board) — mine registers about 2v AC so I suspected it was this board. I replaced it you could see the charring on the backside and the new board is now happily working great (the front of the board looked fine)

These boards have relays that have a limited life span so it’s not a surprise that after 18 years of more or less continuous use it would fail (possibly also there is a design issue with orders ones — the new design is 100% compatible but different enough to make me think they re-designed it to be more robust)

    A very satisfying experience.

I reported the conditions of my relay board which was still under warranty, and was issued an RMA right away. A very satisfying experience.

IQ 2020 Heater Relay Board Installation Instructions PDF

  • Difficulty: medium Repair Time: 30 Heater board gave the red blink of death. Took the old board off, put the new board on and worked like a charm! Posted on the 10th of August 2022 by MP repair_image_211370
  • Difficulty: medium Repair Time: 3H In November 2015, I replaced the burned-out heater relay board (2nd Generation, 3 Relay) in my 2004 Hot Spring Spa with a new one from Backyardplus: (P/N 1310801-1 Assembly Rev. C). I followed the 2015 instructions, which said to leave the yellow tape on the IC chip. I did. The metal bracket seemed to fit without touching the yellow-taped IC. In February 2023, I replaced the heater relay again. There was no apparent heat damage around the relays, but I noticed heat damage around the yellow-taped IC chip. Evidently, vibration from pump operation must have resulted in the metal bracket chewing through the yellow tape, and shorting the IC chip to ground. The photo below shows the scorching of the circuit board around this IC. So, in the current 2023 replacement of heater relay board (P/N 1310801-1 Assembly Rev. F), I cut & bent the metal bracket back — even though it seemed to already have clearance. The lesson learned was the metal bracket can vibrate and shift around during spa usage — just enough to chew through the yellow tape and ground out the IC chip. The photos below show: 1) The proximity of the metal bracket to the IC chip, while lying flush with the circuit board. 2) The darkened yellow tape and circuit board. 3) Reverse view of the same part of the circuit board. My recommendation is that the instructions make it clear to: Cut & Bend back that bracket in *all* replacement installations. The new heater relay board is now in place, and working well.
